Virtual Reality has come a long way in just a few years. And that’s thanks to the people who have supported the several products that have come out, allowing for some experimentation and flourishment of the platform.
However, getting a VR headset can be quite expensive, so it’s no wonder that many indie and mainstream developers have dedicated their time to create some great games that can be played for free. So, if you have a VR headset and are trying to find something good to play, look no further.
Here are some of the best VR games out in the market that are completely free.
Epic Rollercoasters
If you’ve ever been in a mall with one of those VR setups where they charge you for a short virtual reality experience, you’ve probably been through something similar to this game.
Epic Rollercoasters provides what it promises in its name with the added bonus of shooting at targets and controlling your car while you race through the tracks. While not the best of dozens of free VR games out there, it’s a pretty straightforward and fun experience for what it’s worth.
Rec Room
Imagine Rec Room as having your own side activities room, you know the kind, where you have a pool table, darts, arcade games, a huge TV, basically a bunch of stuff to do with friends in one big room.
Rec Room, as its name stands Recreation Room, is all of that and more with a lot of fun games. There are laser tags, parkour courses, sports, co-op quests, and a lot more things. There’s even user-generated content, so you’ll never truly run out of stuff to do in this virtual paradise.
The Red Stare
In The Red Stare, you’ll be put in the role of a secret agent with the task of uncovering the secrets of your neighbors and figure out if they are Russian spies. The aesthetics of the game are pretty cool, with a 1950s vibe that will engross you in the narrative the game sets up.
You have a board you can interact with and juggle clues around, hang the pictures you take in your effort to figure out what’s going on.
It wouldn’t be fair to call this a puzzle game since there’s a lot more deducting and figuring stuff out than just solving a few puzzles. In The Red Stare, you are forced to think outside the box at your own pace and gives you complete control, making you feel like a real-life agent.
It can take a while to figure out who the spies are, so with the value this game provides, it’s surprising to see it’s free.
The Ranger: Lost Tribe
This fantasy game it’s a hack-and-slash with some stealth mixed in. You’re pit against a world of lizard-like creatures with a variety of weapons of your choosing.
The Ranger: Lost Tribe rewards the stealth play style with some awesome sneaky kills, and the enemies are fun to engage in. Whether you like to be a stealthy assassin or a relentless warrior, this game should suit your style needs without paying a buck.
Spiderman: Far From Home VR
There’s not much explanation of what Spiderman: Far From Home VR is about. You’re able to use a few Spidey gadgets to swing your way around the city to stop a giant robot that has gone amuck. It’s short but sweet with the option to free roam the city using your web-slinging skills.
It may not be Spider-Man PS4, but it’s a step forward in the ‘making you feel like Spider-Man series.’ And using your webs as Spidey in VR is a totally different feeling from any Spider-Man game that has come before. Definitively an experience worth trying, especially for a whooping price of zero dollars.
DIRE
Now we’re getting hardcore! Not really, but the style of DIRE certainly is. It’s a sin city-like racing game where you traverse your way through a post-apocalyptic wasteland while a sandstorm sweeps behind you. If that doesn’t scream badass, I don’t know what does.
The enemies racing you are vicious and will stop at nothing to steer you off the road and see you being swallowed whole by the storm.
The Lab
Its no wonder that one of the best-value and impressive-looking free VR games it’s made by Valve. The Lab features the robots from Portal in a fun and hilarious interactive film and has a variety of mini-games to lose yourself in.
It has the longbow game where you shoot little with a bow and arrow, and the Cortex, an arcade shooter that’s addicting and engaging.
I Can Gun
Ok, maybe I’m a sucker for shooters in VR, but it’s a genre that has spawned so many games and has so many opportunities to grow in the VR world that it’s hard not to recommend like ten shooting games at once.
I Can Gun it’s a fun asymmetrical shooter where turrets are placed sporadically around the map, and you have to make your way around with only one gun and your wits.
The turrets are unforgiving, one misstep, and you’ll bite the bullet, literally. But this makes it so much more fun as you have to be careful every time you turn around a corner or enter a new room since you don’t know if there’ll be a not-so-friendly turret waiting to set eye on you.
Aircar
Taking a break from the crazy shooters and blood pumping racing, Aircar remains close to the earliest VR experiences back when the concept wasn’t as polished, and most of what you could do was sit back and admire the scenery.
Aircar has you piloting a flying car through a futuristic city. This is one of the most impressive-looking VR games out there. The skyscrapers lit up in neon lights during the night, while droplets of rainfall on your windshield it’s really a beauty to behold.
It may be a short experience, but one you’ll probably fall back into a few more times.
Wolfenstein 3D VR
Just like it’s name implies, it’s a ported version of Wolfenstein 3D in the VR. This game it’s a nostalgic trip of shooting your way through halls full of Nazis. It’s extremely well-made, retaining the original’s overall feeling brought to the VR experience.
Wolfenstein 3D VR provides a fun ride to revisit this game in such a different manner, and it’s also fun to shoot 2D renderings of enemies while you traverse a 3D world in a very immersed way. It supports both sliding and teleporting for your preferred way of playing.
Compound Demo
Compound is an original shooter with a slick retro style that will keep you gripped. There’s a variety of weapons to choose from. If you’re an 80s or 90s kid, you’re going to appreciate the art style as it’s gorgeous and pays homage to games of the era while looking amazing.
The shooting is fun, and you heal by eating cheeseburgers. I have to clarify, though, that this is the demo I’m talking about and, at the time of this writing, is free with a lot of fun to be had, but if you enjoy it, I’d highly recommend paying for the full game.
Guns’ n’ stories: Preface VR
Guns’ n’ stories: Preface VR is a western shooter where you shoot through waves of enemies with the ability to deflect bullets. The style of the graphics is gorgeous, and while no Red Dead Redemption, it’ll provide some chill, mindless fun to anyone who plays it. Definitively a game worth getting.
VRChat
The bastard child of PS3’s PlayStation Home, Second Life, and Gary’s Mod, VRChat brings the best and the worst of all of those in one package. This is a social hub where you can interact with people all over the world using VR. You can spawn several worlds, with a few side activities and plenty of people ready to make friends or convince you to join their cult. VRChat is one experience that everyone with a VR headset should try at least once in their lifetime.
