Usually, gaming is portrayed as a solitary hobby, which is strange considering how the vast majority of games have a multiplayer component. Still, it’s not too often that you heard about couples playing PC games together. And to that I say, couples that play together, stay together.
Keeping in mind that many people might be starting to introduce their partner to gaming, so I decided that the majority of games listed here will be beginner-friendly, even to those who’s fingers don’t instinctively go for the WASD keys.
Some of the best PC games for couples include co-op games, such as Portal 2 and Borderlands, but there is a wide variety of titles to pick from that allow for gameplay ideal for couples. Steam is filled with such gems such as Overcooked, Gang Beasts, and Cuphead.
Of course, there are way more than just those. In this list, however, we’ll explore some of those options as well as a few that many people may not realize are perfect to put you and your significant other to the test of your gaming skills and relationship strength.
7 Days To Die
7 Days To Die is an open-world zombie survival game. Some might say that it’s a strange choice for a PC game to play as a couple, but hear me out.
It combines many classic survival game tropes and mechanics with the horror post-apocalyptic setting that adds to the atmosphere. While I wouldn’t say that 7 Days To Die is a scary game per se, I wouldn’t recommend it to the faint of heart. Think about it. This is the equivalent of inviting your scaredy-cat partner for horror movie night just to have an excuse for them to be all over you.
Joking aside, this game offers the opportunity not only to play in multiplayer, but also localized, so if you and your SO want to have an entire zombie-ridden world for yourselves, this is the place to be.
And like most other multiplayer games, this one really shines with the company of your close-knit group of friends, or in this case, with your special someone.
Portal 2 Co-op Campaign
Portal 2, specifically the co-op campaign, will truly test your and your special other’s intelligence and patience with each other.
You play as two robots chosen to carry out tests for a sassy artificial intelligence with the help of portal guns, traversing through a myriad of areas with challenging puzzles and a little bit of variety mixed in there. Your objective is simple, to solve the puzzles and get to the next room using your physics-breaking portals and your wit.
Portal 2 will have you and your SO working together to reach the goal and make you laugh with the characteristic humor that Valve is known for. Definitively a PC game that all couples should try if they want to see each other’s abilities in problem-solving and decision making.
Overcooked
This PC game seems to have been made specifically for couples. Overcooked puts you in the shoes of miniature chefs in charge of a kitchen full of obstacles and hazards that would make anyone working on the health department raise an eyebrow. Your objective is to prepare the orders within the time limit.
Do you or your partner know how to cook? If your relationship is one-sided in this aspect, then this game will prove to the non-cooking one how chaotic and fun cooking can be.
Granted, having a bunch of minion-looking chefs preparing food as if they’re working in a restaurant with the fast-paced speed of a McDonalds might not be the most realistic representation of being in the kitchen, but the rewarding, and sometimes stressful, endeavor that is cooking is definitively reflected in this cute, chaotic game.
Keep Talking And Nobody Explodes
Speaking of stressful but fun games with a timer. What’s a better date than to try and disarm a bomb together before time runs out? Honestly, I can’t think of anything more romantic than that!
As the name suggests, you have to talk with your partner to figure out a way to disarm a bomb before it blows everything to pieces. You achieve this by reading instructions on a manual to the other player. And while it may sound simple at first, there are a few caveats that I won’t spoil.
This puzzle game puts emphasis on your communication skills and your ability to keep a cold head.
Fall Guys
This recently released game took the gaming world by storm for a while, arguably because it was free to download for PlayStation Plus members, which brought a huge influx of people to the game right as it was released.
And while Fall Guys takes a lot of inspiration from other amazing multiplayer games, of which we’ll talk about in a minute, it is a unique little game that caught the hearts of people right as the genre of Battle Royale was starting to get stale.
Everyone and their moms want to make their own Battle Royale nowadays, a lot of them only making a few tweaks here and there to make it just different enough to avoid a lawsuit. But Fall Guys actually manages to bring something new to the genre by shaking up the formula in a rainbow-colored setting that will have you and your significant other glued to the monitor to reach that elusive crown.
Gang Beasts
To some, it may be surprising to hear that, before Fall Guys, there was a multiplayer brawler game filled with cute little people bound by clumsy ragdoll physics with the sole objective of throwing other people off the stage. And this game that released back in 2017 called Gang Beasts.
Gang Beasts is perfect for some friendly competition with your other half, and sure to make you laugh with the crazy shenanigans you’ll find yourself into. Either a regular fighting ring, the hanging from the side of a building, or jumping between trucks in the highway, Gang Beasts is bound to bring a smile to both of your faces.
Human: Fall Flat
Well, what do you know, before Gang Beasts, there was another multiplayer where you played as gelatinous beings trying to do simple tasks in the silliest ways, and that is Human: Fall Flat.
This one is a bit different to the others in the sense that while Fall Guys is a sort of Battle Royale and Gang Beasts is a brawler, this one is a platformer with puzzles to solve, so the pacing is a bit slower than the mentioned games, that doesn’t make it any less fun or silly.
Like most other entries on this list, this game is easy to get into, which can be a big deal if your significant other is not usually into gaming. And just like all other entries, this game will provide countless hours of fun for everyone involved.
Borderlands
This open-world RPG shooter and looter game is as addicting as it is fun. For a lot of people, this game was their introduction to the first-person shooter genre. And it’s no wonder considering that it lacks all the heavy, serious tone of most other shooters that make it a bit harder to get into for newcomers, along with stylish graphics and interesting characters.
The humor is one of the main strengths of this PC game that a lot of couples will find refreshing. That, along with the interesting world it takes place in, sets the game apart from other FPS games, making it one of the best contestants to introduce to your not-so-gaming-savvy special other.
The fact Borderlands also has roleplaying elements allow for some unique customization options that other FPS games wouldn’t even offer, and it also acts as a nice introduction to the RPG system that it’s prevalent in other genres like open-world action games and, well, RPGs.
Cuphead
Most of the games on this list could be considered beginner-friendly to any non-gamer, which was one of the main objectives of this article as couples that want to play games together are probably looking to introduce their loved ones to the world of gaming.
But, it’s safe to say that some of these games might induce frustration and show how the couple plays as a team. So I decided to introduce this little gem to the mix. If Cuphead doesn’t make you want to break up or divorce your SO out of sheer frustration, then nothing will.
Cuphead is a 2D platformer game of such challenging levels that it has been compared to the likes of Dark Souls. Although, to be fair, for modern video game critics, anything remotely challenging is Dark Souls.
Difficulty aside, this game is fun and stylish, taking direct inspiration from cartoons of the 1930s era, with hand-drawn animations and jazz music to go with it. While challenging, it’s hard not to recommend it to people who want to play a co-op game, although I would suggest reserving it for couples in which both know where the buttons are without looking.
War of Warcraft
Believe it or not, many love stories started with World Of Warcraft, which is understandable considering the sheer number of people who play it to this day.
But WoW doesn’t get merit only on its playerbase, but also on the fact that it’s still the most popular go-to MMORPG of all time. While it may seem intimidating for newcomers, you can still learn at your own leisure, and if your SO is into WoW, then you won’t have any problems learning the ropes from someone experienced.
Many people who have played it can attest that World of Warcraft is one of a kind, the one that defined the genre into what it is and arguably popularized the term “gaming addiction.”
And just like others on this list, the fact that you can customize and level up at your own leisure with your partner’s help makes it a great game to start a virtual journey together.
Minecraft
This PC game taking place in a blocky world is perfect for couples for its unlimited potential. We all have our preferences when it comes to gaming. Some of us like to explore, others like the dangers of facing enemies, others like to be creative, and some like farming.
In Minecraft, you can do all these things and more, potentially creating a unique team dynamic between you and your significant other that no other game will be able to recreate.
And you don’t have to delegate different tasks to each other either since you can both build, explore, and face the dangers of wilderness together.
There’s a reason why Minecraft is one of the most sold games of all time, and that’s because of the freedom and flexibility it allows you. Not to mention that you don’t need a top-of-the-line gaming PC in order to run it.
Minecraft is the perfect game to play with your significant other just for the number of opportunities for fun activities it offers.
Among Us
As a bonus entry for this list, we have Among Us, the game that has taken the gaming and meme world by storm with its insanely simple yet alluring premise.
You play with a group of other players on a ship, and one, or a few of you, is an impostor whose sole objective is to kill the rest of the crew.
You can see how this premise alone would make for some hilarious moments, not to mention it sounds like the perfect recipe to lose some friendships along the way, so why not add a romantic relationship in there as well? What could possibly go wrong?
In all seriousness, though, the game’s execution of that premise is spot on to the point where you’ll be suspecting your closest friends of ill intent while you try to finish the tasks of the game.
In such a short amount of time, Among Us has gathered an enormous following and has become a favorite among the gaming masses, bringing casual and hardcore games together in a setting that begs for hilarity to ensue.
