how to enchant in minecraft

The blocky world of Minecraft gives players an unparalleled amount of freedom to do as they wish. The game takes full advantage of its sandbox nature by providing the player with all the tools available to create the experience they desire.

If you love to create and let your imagination run wild, you can make countless builds and projects to keep you busy. If you prefer to engage in combat, then there are plenty of enemies and dangerous areas to explore. If you want to lay back, relax and see your farm grow, you can do that too.

With so many different mechanics to learn, it’s easy to get lost in the noise and get confused about what to do to reach your goal.

Minecraft doesn’t tell you what to do or how to do anything most of the time. This level of freedom, while great, can lead to dead ends and frustrations when you want to upgrade your tools and don’t know how to do it.

How To Enchant In Minecraft

how to enchant in minecraft

There are three ways to enchant weapons and tools in Minecraft: Using an Enchanting Table, combining an enchanted book with an unenchanted item using an anvil, or combine two enchanted items to create a new item with both enchantments.

The first and more straightforward one is the Enchanting Table. Using this method, you simply exchange experience points or XP and lapis lazuli to enchant an item.

The quality and rarity of the enchantment you get will be based on your current level, so you’ll get better enchantments at level 30 than at level 10.

Then, there’s the anvil. Using the anvil will allow you to combine enchantments together to create mighty weapons, tools, and armor in ways that you wouldn’t be able to with the Enchanting Table alone.

Be mindful, however, that the anvil uses a lot of XP, and not all enchantments are compatible with each other.

How To Obtain Enchanted Items In Minecraft

There are many different methods on how to obtain enchanted items in Minecraft:

– There is a slight chance that some undead enemies will drop an enchanted item as loot after being defeated.

– A villager may trade enchanted items for emeralds, though they’ll trade bread most of the time.

– Fishing has a chance of giving you enchanted items or books.

– You can barter with piglins, and they can offer you an enchanted book or iron boots.

– They can be found in end cities and treasure chests.

– The Bedrock Edition of Minecraft allows pillagers and vindicators to drop enchanted items in raids.

How To Make An Enchantment Table

how to make an enchantment table

Making an Enchantment Table in Minecraft is pretty straightforward. The difficulty lies in the items you’ll need to create it with. You’ll need one book, two diamonds, and four obsidian

The book can be made with three papers and one leather. The diamonds can be found by mining, and the obsidian is often found near lava or can be created by pouring a bucket of water into lava. The tricky part is that you’ll need a diamond pickaxe to be able to mine the obsidian.

How Many Enchantments Can A Sword Have In Minecraft?

how many enchantments can a sword have

A sword can have up to seven different enchantments. While there is no set limit on the number of enchantments a sword can have, it’s worth keeping in mind that some enchantments are not compatible with each other.

Also, some enchantments may require you to use different methods to obtain. For instance, the Curse of Vanishing enchantment cannot be used through the enchanting table in Survival mode, forcing you to use an anvil by combining the sword with an enchanted book or another enchanted item.

Best Sword Enchantments Minecraft

best sword enchantments

Sharpness V or Smite V. Both Sharpness and Smite significantly increase the damage input of your sword. The difference is that Smite only affects undead mobs, such as zombies, skeletons, strays, and the like, whereas Sharpness affects all mobs but is less effective.

These two are mutually exclusive, however. So, once you have enough XP and diamonds to spare, you can have two swords with the same loadout, except one is going to have Sharpness V and the other Smite V.

Looting III. Looting, as its name implies, increases the rate at which rare items drop. But that’s not all. It also increases the number of items dropped, making it essential for you to have Looting III to obtain rare endgame items and resources.

Sweeping Edge III. It increases the damage dealt to mobs by each hit from a sweep attack. Of course, level three enchantment is the best, dealing a 75% damage bonus.

Unbreaking III increases the durability of your enchanted sword, making it a very obvious choice if you want to extend the life of your sword.

Mending. And of course, one of the most precious and rare enchantments of this list is so helpful that you’ll probably want to add to every single enchanted item you own. Mending repairs items you have by using experience.

– Honorable Mentions: Fire Aspect and Knockback. These are honorable mentions because, depending on your playstyle, these two can cause more trouble than what they’re worth.

Knockback can be pretty useful against Creepers, for example, but it may rob you of precious loot if you happen to knock enemies off cliffs or into lava.

And Fire Aspect, while helpful in PVP, has the potential to get you on fire as well as the enemy. After all, the sword is a close-range weapon.

Best Armor Enchantments

best armor enchantments

Before we move on to try and categorize some of the best armor enchantments for each piece, it’s good to keep in mind that all protection enchantments conflict with each other.

So Protection, Blast Protection, Fire Resistance, and Projection Protection all conflict with each other.

Most of the time, it is recommended to just stack Protection IV on all armor pieces. However, there is the option to have one of the other protections on separate armor pieces.

For instance, you could have Blast Protection IV on your chest plate to survive Creeper attacks more efficiently and Fire Protection on your leggings to deal better with fire.

This will depend on your playstyle and your personal preference. If skeletons give you a hard time, then Projectile Protection might be more useful to you, even if Protection gives you more overall defense.

Protection IV. It goes without saying that Protection is the best enchantment overall for armor. It increases damage reduction in increments of 4% with 16% in Protection IV. While it doesn’t sound like much, it adds up when you add it to all four pieces of armor to a whopping 64% damage reduction.

Unbreaking III The durability of armor is essential, so this enchantment will make so it takes longer before your armor piece breaks while also saving you the resources you would’ve spent otherwise.

Thorns  III This enchantment damages enemies every time they attack you. The tradeoff is that durability drops for the enchanted item. This can be counteracted with Unbreaking and Mending to an extent. If you’re going to use Thorns, it’s best left to one piece of armor.

Mending. This enchantment will repair your armor with the experience you acquire, making it a must for any endgame enchanted armor piece.

– Honorable Mentions: Blast Protection, Fire Resistance, and Projection Protection. These three are honorable mentions because they all can be pretty useful depending on your strengths and weaknesses.

All of them are incompatible with the Protection enchantment, and while Protection does offer more overall defense, sometimes it is more strategically sound to have a few of these scattered through your armor pieces.

Once you have enough experience, you can potentially have several armor sets, each specialized depending on your adventures. An armor set optimized with Fire Resistance can be great for expeditions to the Nether, as well as an armor set with a combo of Blast and Projection Protection can work out great for when you’re mining in one of the many dangerous caves.

Best Helmet Enchantments

Protection IV. The highest level of protection will increase the amount of damage you can take, so it’s always a good idea to wear a hard hat.

Mending. This will allow your helmet to repair itself with the experience points you absorb.

Unbreaking III. Increase the durability of your helmet by using this enchantment and potentially saving yourself some precious resources.

Respiration III. This enchantment is a must for explorers who want to venture deep into the oceans to harvest coral or clear an Ocean Monument. Respiration will allow you to hold your breath for a generous period.

Aqua Affinity. Another must-have for deep divers. Aqua Affinity increases your mining speed underwater, making it way more manageable to get resources in Ocean Monuments.

Best Boots Enchantments In Minecraft

best boots enchantments

Protection IV. Protection will increase the amount of damage you can take. You can choose to use any of the other protective enchantments instead, but know that they are mutually exclusive, and Protection is the one that offers the most overall defense.

Mending. Mending will allow your boots to repair themselves with the experience points you absorb.

Unbreaking III. Increase the durability of your boots and save some resources.

Frost Walker II or Depth Strider III. Two mutually exclusive enchantments, both equally valuable. Depth Strider increases the movement speed of the player underwater, effectively reducing the movement penalty by a significant amount. At max level, the player is able to swim at the same speed as walking. And if you’re wondering: Is Depth Strider faster than using a boat?

A player walking with Depth Strider is significantly faster than using a boat. Frost Walker allows you to create frosted ice blocks when walking over water.

That’s not the only use of this enchantment, however, since it also protects the player from blocks such as campfires and magma blocks. Be warned that this will not protect you against lava.

Feather Falling IV. An incredibly useful enchantment for adventurers who dare on the highest cliffs and deepest of caves, Feather Falling reduces your fall damage. Each level reduces fall damage by 12% and up to 48% at level IV. Feather Falling also reduces damage taken from teleportations using Ender pearls.

Best Shield Enchantments

shield enchantments minecraft

The thing about shields is that they’re extremely easy to make and cheap on resources.

So, most of the time, it’s not even worth having an enchanted shield. It could be argued that the Curse of Vanishing could be helpful in PVP situations since it would remove the possibility of another player stealing your shield after you die.

But let’s face it. Shields aren’t really rare in the first place. Still, if you do want to enchant your shield anyways, the best enchantments for it are:

Unbreaking III to increase its durability and Mending, so the shield can repair itself with the experience you gain.

Best Bow Enchantments

bow enchantments minecraft

Power V. This enchantment increases the amount of damage you deal when attacking using a bow. The bow itself requires a lot of skill to use, but even if the bow is not your primary weapon of use, it is still a great idea to have your bow enchanted with this.

Punch. Much like Knockback, this enchantment pushes the attacked mob or player with every strike they receive from your arrows. And just like Knockback, it is recommendable to use level 1 considering how far Punch II pushes enemies.

Flame. As the name implies, this enchantment ignites arrows and deals Fire damage to enemies. It can be used offensively or as a tool to ignite TNT from afar or even light a Campfire.

Infinity. Infinity stops your bow from consuming arrows when you fire it. You still need to have a single arrow in order to fire it. This enchantment is incompatible with Mending as it defeats the purpose of having both.

Considering how valuable Mending can be on other tools and weapons and how Infinity is exclusive to Bows, it’s safe to say that the best option is to go with Infinity.

Unbreaking III. Of course, if you want to keep your bow as long as possible without breaking, this enchantment is a must-have.

Best Crossbow Enchantments

crossbow enchantments minecraft

Mending. Essential for every weapon and tool. Mending will fix your crossbow with the experience points you absorb.

Unbreaking III. Another essential enchantment. Unbreaking will increase the durability of your crossbow dramatically.

Quick Charge III. This enchantment reduces the amount of time it takes to reload, allowing you to fire your arrows faster than when using a bow.

Piercing IV or Multishot. These two enchantments are mutually exclusive and a bit tricky to tackle.

Multishot is especially useful when playing in the open as it fires three arrows at once, making you able to hit multiple enemies at once. It also works with firework rockets.

Piercing is great for narrow corridors, caves, and the like because it makes your arrows able to go through your enemy and into what’s behind them.

Piercing can also save you some arrows in the long run since you’re able to pick them up after shooting them. In cases like this, it is recommended to have Piercing IV on one crossbow and Multishot on another so you can adapt to any situation.

Best Enchantments For Trident

best trident enchantments

Impaling V. It deals extra damage to aquatic mobs. This enchantment is a must for raids to any Ocean Monuments on your way and is easily one of the most powerful damage dealers in Minecraft.

Loyalty III. This enchantment allows you to use the Trident to its full potential as a ranged weapon. Loyalty makes it so that when you throw the Trident, it returns to your inventory after a short time. The highest level of Loyalty increases the speed of the Trident returning significantly.

Channeling. Channeling is one of the most fun and interesting enchantments in the world of Minecraft. When you throw the Trident, this enchantment will summon lighting that strikes on the mobs you hit.

Channeling only works during a thunderstorm, and you have to be out in the open for it to work. Funnily enough, some mobs transform when struck by lightning. Creepers turn into Charged Creepers, Villagers turn into a Witch, Pigs into Zombified Piglins, and Mooshrooms change colors.

Riptide III. With this enchantment, you can throw the Trident when the player is standing in water, during snowy weather or rainy weather, then the player will be teleported to wherever the Trident is launched.

This way, the Trident turns into one of the most efficient means of transportation on Minecraft. Riptide is mutually exclusive with Channeling and Loyalty, meaning that you can have Riptide and either one or the other. Channeling and Loyalty are compatible with each other, however.

Unbreaking III. To increase the trident’s durability.

Mending. Which will allow the trident to repair itself with the experience you gain.

Best Enchantments For Axe

best axe enchantments

Mending. Mending so your axe can repair itself with the experience points you absorb.

Unbreaking III. To increase the durability of your axe and save some resources.

Sharpness V or Smite V. Both Sharpness and Smite greatly increase the damage input of your axe. Smite only affects undead mobs, however, such as zombies, skeletons, strays, and the like, whereas Sharpness affects all mobs but is less effective.

Since these enchantments are incompatible with each other, one good thing you could do is to have two axes with the same loadout, except one is going to have Sharpness V and the other Smite V.

Efficiency V. This will greatly increase the woodcutting speed of your axe, as well as increase the chance of stunning a shield depending on the level of the enchantment.

Best Enchantments For Shovel

best shovel enchantments

Mending. Mending for your shovel to repair itself with the experience points you absorb.

Unbreaking III. To increase the durability of your shovel.

Efficiency V. Efficiency on a shovel will increase your digging speed immensely. At the highest Efficiency level, you’ll just click and dig up any block you touch.

Silk Touch. It allows you to harvest grass blocks, compared to dirt blocks, snow, as well as ice, and the like. This enchantment is optional and only necessary if you need these kinds of blocks.

Best Pickaxe Enchantments In Minecraft

best pickaxe enchantments

Mending. Mending for your pickaxe to repair itself with the experience points you absorb.

Unbreaking III. To increase the durability of your pickaxe significantly.

Efficiency V. With this enchantment, your mining speed will increase immensely. Mining through gravel and stone will no longer feel like a chore but instead like you’re cutting through butter at the highest enchantment level.

Silk Touch or Fortune III. These two enchantments are incompatible with each other. Since both have something valuable to offer, it is recommendable to have two pickaxes.

You can have one pickaxe with Silk Touch for mining that will allow you to mine stone blocks instead of cobblestone, and another one with Fortune III, which will increase mining drops such as diamonds, Redstone dust, lapis lazuli, and emeralds.

Best Enchantments For Fishing Rod

best fishing rod enchantments

Mending. Mending will allow your fishing rod to repair itself with the experience points you absorb.

Unbreaking III. Increase the durability of your fishing rod and save some resources.

– Lure III. This enchantment will increase the speed at which fish comes for your bobble, allowing you to catch more fish and more treasure.

– Luck of the Sea III. Luck of the sea will greatly increase the chances of finding treasures such as rare items and enchanted books instead of junk. You’ll see a huge difference in the loot you get with level III of this enchantment.

Best Elytra Enchantments

best elytra enchantments

The Elytra is a handy and rare piece of equipment that is found in End ships.

These wings are the only single item source of flight in Minecraft, at least in Survival mode. The durability of the Elytra is quite poor, however, providing around seven minutes without enchantments, which is why the only two enchantments the Elytra can have are essential for every player.

Mending. While the Elytra can’t truly break like regular tools can, once its durability reaches 1, it will stop working until repaired, making the Mending enchantment an essential addition to your arsenal. With Mending, your Elytra will repair itself with the experience points you absorb.

Unbreaking III. Unbreaking at the highest enchantment level will increase the Elytra’s flight time to a total of 28 minutes instead of the base 7 minutes.

Best Enchantments For Nether Expeditions

nether expeditions

Fire Protection. This enchantment is a no-brainer for those who look to venture into the depths of the Nether. Fire protection dramatically reduces the damage the player takes from all sources of heat, such as lava and fire.

Considering the dangerous hellish landscape of the Nether, this enchantment will help you traverse the Nether with more peace of mind.

Feather Falling. This enchantment is helpful while going to mine in deep caves and ravines as well as the Nether. Feather Falling can be applied to Boots, and it protects you from taking excessive fall damage. Definitely a must-have enchantment for adventurers of all types.

Soul Speed. An enchantment only available for Boots, Soul Speed increases your speed when walking on Soul Sand. It is best to use in conjunction with Unbreaking III and/or Mending.
