Skyrim mods for the PS4 are hard to find. That’s because Sony has had a few reservations about the modding community. The company has limited the space available to run mods on the PS4 version of Skyrim, along with outright refusing to allow modders to use external assets for the mods. This, in turn, has created a pretty small market for us PlayStation fans. Not all things are bad, though.
While there is a more expansive library of mods on other platforms like PC and even Xbox, that doesn’t mean that the PS4 crew doesn’t have some toys to play with.
A few of the best Skyrim mods available on the PS4 include Character Editor, Weapons and Magic of Skyrim, and Realm of Lorkhan, with a library that’s slowly but surely growing.
For the sake of variety, I decided not to focus too much on one theme, so you’ll find a mix of mods that alter gameplay, graphics, or add unique mechanics to make the game all the more enjoyable and replayable than it already is.
Whiterun – Underground Den
There has never been a shortage of home mods in Skyrim, especially on the PS4 version. However, there are a few that take the cake for convenience, creativity, and ingenuity. Whiterun – Underground Den, created by DraugrDeathOverlord, capsules this perfectly.
While there’s nothing extravagant or outright mind-blowing about this little corner of the world, it manages to capture the heart of the players who’ve downloaded and called it home. It’s lore-friendly, cozy, and comes with all the bells and whistles you’d expect.
It has an anvil, cocking pot, tanning rack, alchemy table, an armor workbench, and a few chests to store your items. You can take most of the items with you, and they will respawn after a while. This small player home should provide a lot of conveniences, especially for new players.
Hobbiton
For all the fans of Lord of the Rings franchise comes another player home mod, but with the fangirl-screech inducing treat of adding a hobbit hole to chill. The maker of this mod, Ozymandy, has put a close eye to detail in their creation, especially in the alchemy lab and enchanting table area.
While a mod like this could potentially lead to pretty jarring differences between the mod itself and the rest of the vanilla game, Hobbiton manages this quite gracefully. The home doesn’t feel out of place with the rest of the world and, while not exactly lore-friendly, could be considered part of the main game for the inexperienced eye.
For fear of sounding like a real state agent, this will be the last player’s home mod of the list.
Character Editor – All In One Customization Pack
This Skyrim PS4 mod does exactly what the name suggests, it brings a myriad of new possibilities to your character’s customization options. You’re no longer bound by the preset options for each race, but instead, you can mix and match in a way that, somehow, doesn’t look ridiculous.
Now, to be clear, you can still create an abomination if you heart so desires, you have even more options now than ever to do so, but your character can now have human features, with the complexion of an elf and even horns without it looking out of place if you don’t want to.
Not only that, but Julihah’s creation also adds a bunch of new features such as new hair colors, styles, skins, options (such as having heterochromatic eyes), and warpaints. So the possibilities are nearly endless, giving you all the freedom to take an extra hour or two in the customization menu every time you start a new game.
Weapons And Magic Of Skyrim
Weapons And Magic Of Skyrim adds unobtainable and unused weapons, projectiles, spells, enchantments. It also allows you to craft replicates of the legendary weapons in the game, along with unique weapons that can be obtained in specific locations.
The spells can be purchased and learned from a merchant. The new enchantments can be found on the few new weapons added. Powers inherent to other races and creatures can also be found and bought along with necklaces that allow you to have the passive effects of other creatures that you otherwise wouldn’t have in vanilla Skyrim.
It’s worth noting that FlynnJohn has stated that this Skyrim PS4 mod is unfinished and that there are still spells and enchantments to be added to the game, which means that there could be more content for this mod soon enough. Although, he also said he was getting tired of working on it, so we may have to wait and see. In the meantime, there’s a lot that Weapons And Magic Of Skyrim provide to keep you busy.
H.A.S.T.E.
Horrible Andy’s Skyrim Tweaked Effects is unique among the rest of Skyrim’s mods for the PS4 in the sense that it changes certain aspects of the game that most people would not notice at first glance. However, after playing for a while with this mod, it’s proven to be one of those mods that’s going to remain installed for the rest of my playthroughs.
It’s one of those things that you never thought you needed until you got it, and now you can’t live without it. Apparently, animals in Skyrim can report crimes, which explains a couple of things in hindsight. But now, this mod removes that feature from the game. The result? I don’t have to worry about chickens reporting my crimes to the guards.
The distance that enemies can chase you has been reduced, along with their line of sight whenever you commit a crime. Let’s be honest, a guard being able to identify you effortlessly from miles away is not exactly immersive.
It also removes that annoying sidestep that enemies can perform when shot with one of your arrows. If you can’t dodge arrows, then nobody else can! Another neat little feature is that torches illuminate more, and enemies no longer make that little spin dance move when they die. If you’ve played Skyrim for longer than a couple of hours, then you’ll know which one I’m talking about.
Those are only a few of the several features that enhance Skyrim’s gameplay in very small, but significant ways. There are many more features to list, but not only it’d take the entire article, it would also spoil the fun to tell you all of them.
Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch
Now on the more technical side of things. The Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch is the number one must-have PS4 mod almost anyone who plays this game. You see, in case you haven’t noticed, Bethesda has a tendency to create their games in an outdated and broken engine. While they have created amazing games such as this one, it would be an understatement to say that Skyrim is a ‘little buggy.’
So, this mod is basically an entire overhaul of a bunch of different aspects of the game. I’m talking hundreds of changes that go from bugs fixes to keep your save files secure. Not only that, but the creator of this mod is dedicated to keeping it updated, so not even one minuscule little error will keep you, the player, from enjoying this masterpiece of a game.
Another neat little thing is that this mod is made to be compatible with as many other mods as possible, so the actual possibility that this will somehow interfere with another mod you install is extremely low. There’s literally no reason not to download this mod, believe me, your save file and your glitched horse will thank you.
Realm of Lorkhan
Personally, one of my favorite mods, I was so glad to hear that Realm of Lorkhan could be downloaded for the PS4, considering how Sony has narrowed down the market of mods in this platform.
This Skyrim mod for the PS4 provides you with an alternate beginning of your journey. No longer will you ever have to hear: “Hey, you’re finally awake.” Nor will you have to endure the initial mission in Helgen all over again every time you want to create a new character.
Instead, PossesedLemon (yeah, that’s the creator’s name) places you in the awe-inspiring and jaw-dropping realm known as Lorkhan. Here, you’ll be able to choose a birthstone, your equipment, and the location you want to spawn in the game; there’s also the option to choose a class.
Do you want to start as a smith? A mage’s apprentice? How about a common farmer? The choice is yours! Simply walk into the gem of your choosing, and you’ll spawn there. The starting locations are also pretty spread out and different enough from each other for them to feel like a totally new adventure every time you start a new game.
Phenderix Magic Reloaded
Phenderix Magic Reloaded is a mod exclusive for Skyrim on the PS4. It’s a variation of the Phenderix Magic World available for PC and Xbox, but with substantially different content, hence different names.
It completely enhances the magic in the world of Skyrim by adding over 250 spells, new types of spells, new summons, along with intriguing new armor sets, weapons, and items.
The creator doesn’t stop there since this mod also features new, lore-friendly loading screens, a player home, exciting boss encounters and locations.
Immersive Citizens – AI Overhaul
If you’re all up about increasing the immersion of your game, here’s a comprehensive overhaul mod that will massively improve the AI of friendly NPCs to the point where they’ll act like real people depending on the environment and interactions, both positive and negative.
Combat has been revamped with a neat little feature the creator calls “Survival Instinct” that gives the NPCs a sense of danger and the ability to respond accordingly. No longer will the cabbage vendor try to fight the dragon along with you and the guards, instead he’ll try to stay alive, probably by running away.
Little stuff like schedules, traveling patterns, and responses to the world around them, such as changes in weather, will make it feel like you’re playing a Rockstar game. Even dialogues will be expanded depending on the city you’re in. Arnaud.Dorchymont has definitively done an amazing job in creating a breathing, living world inside of the already fantastic province of Skyrim.
The Great Cities
Have you ever wondered why the great cities of Skyrim may not seem as, well, great? Don’t get me wrong, Bethesda has created such a deep and immersive world that manages to soak the player almost effortlessly even with the sea of bugs and glitches Bethesda is known for. But, when you read the lore about places like Winterhold or Dawnstar or Dragon Bridge, it may seem a bit underwhelming in retrospect.
In actuality, these seem to be more like big towns rather than the huge sprawling cities they’re known as. The creator set out to change that with The Great Cities mod.
This mod doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel with outlandish creations but instead builds upon what’s already been established in Skyrim, remaining lore-friendly while providing a magnificent improvement upon the cities it affects.
It is a merge of several city overhauls, and it works wonders, building huge walls and towers surrounding the cities while keeping the original interiors unscathed.
Kings of Hell: Behind Enemy Lines
As explained before, it is hard to find good quests mods for Skyrim on PS4 since Sony doesn’t allow external assets to be inserted into their mods, which really hinders the ability of modders to introduce new stuff into the game. As a result of this, a lot of amazing quests mods are not available for the PS4 as of the time of this writing. There is light at the end of the tunnel, however.
Some members of the modding community, such as Bunnyninja2 (gotta love their names), have managed to create Kings of Hell: Behind Enemy Lines, a phenomenal mod that introduces ten new available races, along with ten new bosses to fight, brand new weapons and a few other new challenges to face.
Each boss is one of the Kings of Hell, as the name implies, you find a note just outside of an abandoned jail, there it reads the location of all bosses you need to go after, each boss defeated brings you one step closer to Lucifer Morningstar.
Epic Enhanced Console Graphics
As the name implies, this mod promises an epic enhancement to the graphics of the console version of Skyrim, and it delivers on that promise, bringing the game one step closer to what you’d find on the PC version.
Epic Enhanced Console Graphics lightly touches on the colors of the world around you, even though there’s not much of a difference in terms of ENB colors, it’s still noticeable enough to be a nice addition. The world takes a more vivid light, giving it an atmosphere that’s hard to replicate. Let’s face it, vanilla Skyrim, while gorgeous, might be a little dull at times in terms of color pallet and lightning.
Add to that a few realistic FX effects with enhanced lighting, and you have a recipe for some gorgeous views.
Surreal Lightning
Surreal Lighting does not drastically change the weather or interiors or does anything extraordinary. It just focuses on the lightning by altering the saturation and brightness of the game. It may not sound like much, but what it does, it does amazingly.
The sun’s lens flares along with the saturation give the world a dream-like atmosphere, bringing Skyrim closer to what a conventional fantasy RPG would look like. Instead of the grayish tones that the late 2000s and early 2010s were known for in the gaming industry, you can now have the vibrant colors that will breathe new life into the game.
It’s hard not to recommend a mod that has truly made me appreciate Skyrim’s well-designed world a little more.
